Formula 1 has added Malaysia to its 2026 schedule, with the Sepang International Circuit hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, replacing the original round in Sakhir that was cancelled earlier in the season due to conflict in the Middle East.
The event will retain the title of 'Bahrain Grand Prix', with the Gulf state funding the race in a show of support for the sport. Malaysia will host an F1 race for the first time since 2017.
The October race slots between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku (September 24-26) and the Singapore Grand Prix (October 9-11), creating a triple-header of back-to-back race weekends. The addition brings the current calendar to 23 rounds, but the status of the final two races — Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6) — remains uncertain as the geopolitical situation evolves.
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali said: "We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026. Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1."
Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said the staging of the event built on "the close and brotherly relations between our two countries." He added: "This will be a wonderful experience for fans around the world and reflects Bahrain's enduring commitment to, and passion for, the sport."
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim said: "Malaysia stands ready to welcome Formula 1, the FIA, the teams and fans from around the world back to Sepang. We look forward to showcasing our world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and warm hospitality."
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the governing body had "worked tirelessly" in its attempts to reschedule the event in Bahrain, with the safety of teams, volunteers, officials, and fans remaining the highest priority.
The change still requires World Motor Sport Council approval, but the step is considered a formality. Italy's Imola circuit, Portugal, and Turkey — all of which return to the calendar in 2027 — are understood to be potential alternatives if further replacements are needed.
