England para-cyclist Matthew Robertson claimed gold in the men's C1-C3 3,000m individual pursuit at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, breaking the Games record for a second time in the space of a single day.
The 27-year-old lowered the mark in the morning qualification session, only for Scotland's Fin Graham to go quicker and set up a gold-medal showdown between training partners. In the afternoon final, Robertson responded with a stunning ride of three minutes 22.597 seconds, putting the pressure firmly on Graham, who went out hard in a bid to reply before his challenge faded.
"That was probably the hardest end to a bike race I've ever watched," said Robertson. "It was so close. I knew roughly what times Fin could do because we train together all the time, and I knew I'd done a good ride, even without looking at the clock, just from how it felt. It was really nerve-wracking watching him."
The victory capped a memorable day on the track at Glasgow 2026. Matthew Bostock delivered the Isle of Man's first Commonwealth Games gold since 2006, holding off Australia's Oliver Bleddyn to win the men's 40km points race, while Joe Truman took silver in the men's 1,000m time trial behind Australia's Leigh Hoffman, who set a Games record of his own.
There was also a landmark moment for England's Kadeena Cox. The 35-year-old, who missed two Games through injury, claimed her first Commonwealth medal with silver in the women's C4-C5 1,000m time trial, as Australia's Tara Neyland bettered her own world record by a full second to win gold in one minute 09.667 seconds.
"I'm really proud of myself to go out there and execute what was only my second kilo, and it was so close," said Cox. "We've got the World Championship in three months time so I'll go do what I didn't do today and then it's onto LA. LA is going to be a really big one for me, I'll probably retire there."
For Robertson, the manner of the win — twice breaking the Games record and then holding off a rival who knows his every move — underlined his standing in international para-cycling, with the World Championships and the LA 2028 Paralympics now on the horizon.
