Lorenzo Musetti will face fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the first round of the ATP Washington Open, setting up an all-Italian clash at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in the U.S. capital.
Musetti is making his long-awaited return from a right femoral injury that forced him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon, having also retired from his Australian Open match against Novak Djokovic while leading. The 24-year-old from Carrara is seeded fourth in the 32-player draw at the Mubadala DC Open, which runs from July 27 to August 2. Alex de Minaur heads the seeding and will open his title defence against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who received a wild card into the main draw.
Taylor Fritz is seeded third and could meet Musetti in the quarter-finals. Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton could await in the semi-finals from the bottom half of the draw, while De Minaur, the reigning champion, would likely meet the winner of that section in the final if he navigates his own path. Jack Draper returns from injury with a wild card and faces Learner Tien, and Kei Nishikori is also in the draw with a wild card entry.
