Lorenzo Musetti will make his long-awaited return to competitive tennis when he faces compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in an all-Italian first-round clash at the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, an ATP 500 event that kicks off the North American hard-court swing towards the US Open.
The 24-year-old from Carrara, seeded No. 3 in the nation's capital, has not played a tour match since his Round of 16 defeat to Casper Ruud at the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome on May 12. That loss ended a frustrating European clay season during which Musetti — once ranked as high as world No. 5 — struggled with a muscle injury that ultimately forced him to miss both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the first time he had skipped a Grand Slam since breaking through in 2022.
Now ranked No. 15, Musetti arrives in Washington carrying the weight of a season that promised so much after his run to the Australian Open semifinals in January, where he led Novak Djokovic by two sets before retiring with injury. That match, and the physical setbacks that followed, have tested the Italian's resilience. He has since parted ways with coach José Perlas and reverted to his long-time coach Simone Tartarini.
Arnaldi, ranked just outside the top 40, comes into the match with reasonable form from the European clay swing. The 25-year-old from Sanremo has shown flashes of the tennis that took him to the fourth round of the US Open in 2024 but has struggled for consistency this season. The head-to-head record favours Musetti 3-0, though all three meetings predate the younger Italian's injury layoff.
The winner will face a qualifier in the second round before a potential quarterfinal meeting with sixth seed Frances Tiafoe. Top seed Alex de Minaur headlines the draw and faces a blockbuster opener against wild card Stefanos Tsitsipas. Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, and returning Kei Nishikori are also in the men's field.
In doubles, top seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori open their campaign against American Maxime Cressy and Austrian Alexander Erler. On the women's side of the combined event, Elisabetta Cocciaretto takes on Denmark's Clara Tauson in the WTA 500 first round.
