Linda Noskova recovered from missing five championship points to beat her friend Karolina Muchova in an extraordinary and dramatic all-Czech Wimbledon final, claiming her first Grand Slam title.
The young Czech looked set for a routine win when she led 6-2 5-2, but she crumbled with the finishing line in sight as the 10th-seeded Muchova won five games in a row to force a deciding set. Noskova steadied herself to take the third set 6-3 and secure the crown.
At 21, Noskova becomes one of the youngest Wimbledon champions of the modern era, capping a fortnight in which she captured the hearts of the Centre Court crowd with her poise and humour. Muchova, a major finalist once before, was left to hail her compatriot's nerve.
