The Football Association of Wales has become the first national association to officially withdraw its backing for Gianni Infantino's bid for another term as FIFA president, a move that intensifies the pressure on the Swiss-Italian administrator less than seven months before the governing body's elective congress.
The FAW's decision, confirmed on 3 August, is the first formal withdrawal of support for Infantino among FIFA's 211 member associations and lands at a moment of acute tension over the organisation's governance. The rift has been widening since FIFA unveiled Forward Enterprise, a plan to open parts of its commercial business — including assets linked to the World Cup — to private investors. Critics, led by UEFA, argued the project bypassed proper oversight and threatened the sport's governance standards.
The fallout has been building for weeks. UEFA has publicly warned that it is evaluating legal action over the failed project and has asked FIFA to identify and preserve all relevant documents, an unusually confrontational stance between European football's governing body and the world federation. Several European federations, including England's FA, are reported to be weighing similar breaks with Infantino's leadership.
