Carlos Sainz ha dichiarato che era "impossibile evitare" il contatto con Oscar Piastri durante il Gran Premio d'Ungheria, rivelando che un problema con il sistema di bandiere blu della FIA lo ha lasciato all'oscuro di essere sul punto di essere doppiato. L'incidente è avvenuto al 39° giro dei 70 previsti, alla curva 2 dell'Hungaroring.
Piastri, che era rientrato ai box dalla prima posizione, si è ritrovato nel traffico e ha tentato di doppiare Sainz. Il pilota Williams era però impegnato in una battaglia con Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) e non è stato avvertito dell'arrivo della McLaren.
"A questo punto non avevo idea che stessi per essere doppiato," ha spiegato Sainz ai media dopo aver concluso la gara 18° con due giri di ritardo. "In più, ero in una grande battaglia con Fernando, cercando di infilarmi all'interno in curva, e mi sarei aspettato che Oscar fosse lì. E anche se fosse stato lì, o dove mi sarei aspettato, era nel mio angolo cieco. Quindi era impossibile da parte mia evitarlo."
Sainz ha aggiunto che "probabilmente una comunicazione migliore avrebbe aiutato, ma allo stesso tempo è stata una cosa di gara." Il pilota spagnolo ha ricevuto una penalità di 5 secondi per l'incidente, ma ha minimizzato: "Ho preso 5 secondi, ma non mi interessa quando lotto per la P18."
Il pilota spagnolo ritiene che il problema con le bandiere blu avrebbe dovuto portare i commissari a dichiarare il contatto come un incidente di gara. Ha anche suggerito che Piastri — che si è poi ritirato per un guasto al cambio — avrebbe potuto essere più cauto dato i problemi con il sistema di segnalazione.
"Sono davvero dispiaciuto per Oscar, ma questa volta credo di avere una scusa abbastanza valida su ciò che è successo," ha concluso Sainz. "Non so se anche lui avrebbe potuto essere un po' più cauto visto che stava lottando per un podio, e posizionarsi in modo più prudente, a causa dei problemi che stavamo avendo tutti con le bandiere blu."

Carlos Sainz Says Piastri Collision Was "Impossible to Avoid" Due to Blue Flag Failure
Carlos Sainz has claimed it was "impossible to avoid" colliding with Oscar Piastri during the Hungarian Grand Prix, revealing that a problem with the FIA's blue flag system left him unaware he was about to be lapped. The incident occurred on lap 39 of 70 at Turn 2 of the Hungaroring.
Piastri, who had pitted from the lead of the race, found himself in traffic and attempted to lap Sainz's Williams. However, Sainz was engaged in a battle with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and had not been informed of the McLaren's approach.
"At this stage I had no idea I was about to get lapped," Sainz told media after finishing two laps down in 18th place. "On top of that, I was in a big fight with Fernando, trying to undercut him into the corner, and I would have expected Oscar to have been there. And even if he was there, or where I would have expected, he was in my [blind] spot on the angle. So it was impossible from my side to avoid him."
Sainz added that "probably a bit better communication would have helped, but at the same time it was a racing thing." The Spanish driver received a five-second time penalty for the incident but downplayed its impact: "I took the five seconds, but I don't care when I'm fighting for P18."
He believes the blue flag system failure should have led the stewards to classify the clash as a racing incident, and suggested Piastri — who later retired with an unrelated gearbox failure — could have exercised more caution given the known signalling problems.
"I'm really sorry for Oscar, but this time I think I have a pretty good excuse as to what happened," Sainz concluded. "I don't know if he could also have been a bit more careful given he is the one fighting for a podium, and positioned himself a bit more cautiously, because of the issues we were all having with the blue flags."
