James, who turns 42 in December, joins a formidable starting lineup featuring league MVP Joel Embiid, All-Stars Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown — the 2024 NBA Finals MVP acquired in a blockbuster trade from Boston — and promising second-year standout VJ Edgecombe.
"This is my last challenge," James said. He would become the first player in NBA history to win championships with four different franchises, having previously won with Cleveland, Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Sixers, who haven't won a title since 1983, have undergone a front-office transformation with Bob Myers (four titles as Golden State executive) and new team president Mike Gansey. Coach Nick Nurse received an extraordinary 59th birthday gift with the James signing.
