La Formula 1 ha confermato che la Malaysia ospiterà il "Gran Premio del Bahrain" il 4 ottobre 2026 sul circuito di Sepang, segnando il ritorno del tracciato malese nel calendario per la prima volta dal 2017. L'evento, che porterà il calendario a 23 gare, si inserisce tra il Gran Premio d'Azerbaijan (26 settembre) e il Gran Premio di Singapore (11 ottobre), creando un triple-header.
La decisione è stata resa necessaria dal conflitto in Medio Oriente, che ha causato la cancellazione del Gran Premio del Bahrain originariamente previsto per aprile. Anche il Gran Premio dell'Arabia Saudita è stato cancellato, riducendo il calendario da 24 a 22 gare con un mese di pausa forzata ad aprile.
Il nome anomalo è frutto dell'accordo tra Bahrein e Malaysia: il Bahrain finanzierà la gara a Sepang, che manterrà ufficialmente il titolo di "Gran Premio del Bahrain". Il principe ereditario del Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, ha definito l'evento come un'occasione per "costruire sulle strette e fraterne relazioni tra i nostri due paesi".
"Siamo lieti di confermare che la Malaysia ospiterà il Gran Premio del Bahrain nel 2026," ha dichiarato il presidente della Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali. "Ancora una volta, lo sport ha dimostrato la sua capacità di adattarsi, trovare soluzioni e ottenere risultati."
Il primo ministro malese Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim ha aggiunto: "La Malaysia è pronta ad accogliere la Formula 1, la FIA, i team e i tifosi di tutto il mondo a Sepang. Non vediamo l'ora di mostrare la nostra infrastruttura mondiale, l'eccellenza operativa e la calda ospitalità."
La modifica al calendario necessita ancora dell'approvazione del World Motor Sport Council, ma la formalità è considerata una semplice formalità. Restano dubbi sulla possibilità che anche gli ultimi due round della stagione, in Qatar (27-29 novembre) e Abu Dhabi (4-6 dicembre), possano essere confermati.

Malaysia Returns to F1 Calendar, Will Host 'Bahrain Grand Prix' at Sepang in October
Formula 1 has confirmed that Malaysia will host the "Bahrain Grand Prix" on October 4, 2026 at the Sepang International Circuit, marking the track's return to the calendar for the first time since 2017. The race, which expands the schedule to 23 rounds, slots between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26 and the Singapore Grand Prix on October 11, creating a triple-header.
The unusual arrangement was necessitated by continued conflict in the Middle East, which forced the cancellation of the original Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for April. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was also cancelled, reducing the calendar from 24 to 22 races and creating a month-long break in April.
The event carries the anomalous title because Bahrain will fund the race at Sepang, with the Gulf state's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa describing it as building "on the close and brotherly relations between our two countries."
"We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026," said Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali. "Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1."
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim added: "Malaysia stands ready to welcome Formula 1, the FIA, the teams and fans from around the world back to Sepang. We look forward to showcasing our world-class infrastructure, operational excellence and warm hospitality."
The calendar change still requires approval from the World Motor Sport Council, although that step is considered a formality. Doubts remain over whether the final two rounds of the season in Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6) will be able to proceed at their planned venues.
