Mourning at Atalanta. Head coach Maurizio Sarri has left pre-season training following the death of his father Amerigo, who passed away at the age of 97.
The coach did not attend today's training session, which was led by assistant Marco Ianni, and hours later the club released an official statement of condolence. Amerigo Sarri was not only the coach's father: he was a cycling champion in the post-war period, retiring at just 25, but continuing to be a reference figure for the spread of cycling in Italy. He was part of the group that trained with legends such as Gino Bartali.
Atalanta expressed 'profound sorrow' for the passing of Amerigo Sarri, rallying around their coach in this moment of grief.
