All four Serie A sides in action on Friday eased through the first round of the Coppa Italia, as the 2026-27 edition of Italy's knockout competition got properly under way with single-leg ties.
Fiorentina were the most emphatic winners, brushing aside Benevento 4-1 in Florence. Gudmundsson opened the scoring after two minutes and Kean doubled the lead in the 35th, before Ranieri and Ndour made it four within five minutes of the restart. Lamesta's 54th-minute effort was nothing more than a consolation for the Serie C visitors.
Parma edged past Catania 2-0 thanks to a first-half brace from Lontani, who struck in the 19th and 35th minutes. Cagliari needed a 23rd-minute Deiola penalty to see off a stubborn Arezzo 1-0, while Monza cantered to a 3-0 win over Avellino, Varela scoring twice in the opening period — in the 22nd and 45th minutes — and Forson adding a third in the 51st.
All four clubs now advance to the round of 32, scheduled for 2 September, where the winners of the remaining first-round ties will join them.
The rest of the first round is played out over the weekend. Saturday's card features Catanzaro-Südtirol, Udinese-Padova, Venezia-Modena and Torino-Carrarese, while Sunday's fixtures include Frosinone-Juve Stabia and Genoa-Ascoli.
With the new Serie A season kicking off next weekend, the cup ties offered the top-flight sides their first competitive minutes of the campaign — and all four made them count.
