Emma Finucane became the first sprinter — male or female — to win four track gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games when she powered to victory in the keirin at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Welsh rider added the keirin crown to the team sprint, individual sprint and 1,000m time trial titles she had already collected, completing her unprecedented quartet in four successive days of racing.
Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand, who was defending the Commonwealth keirin title she won in Birmingham four years ago, finished second.
Finucane's haul surpassed the three track titles that Australian great Anna Meares claimed in 2010 and Andrews managed in 2022, establishing her as the most successful female athlete in Welsh Commonwealth Games history.
The record had briefly belonged to Para-sprinter Olivia Breen, who held it for just two days before Finucane overtook her.
Only Aaron Gate of New Zealand has previously won four golds at a single Commonwealth Games, when he collected three on the track and one in the road race at Birmingham 2022.
Weightlifter David Morgan remains Wales' most successful Commonwealth Games athlete of all time with nine golds and three silvers.
Finucane's victory delivered Wales' 31st medal of the Glasgow Games, taking their tally to nine golds, ten silvers and twelve bronzes.
The keirin success crowned a dominant week for Finucane, who swept every sprint event she entered in Glasgow and has now established herself as the outstanding female track sprinter of her generation on the Commonwealth stage.
Her fourth gold came 24 hours after she had become the first Welsh woman to win three titles at a single edition of the Games, and her performances across the week drew comparisons with the greatest names in the sport's history.
Wales' team sprint trio, with Edmunds and Thomas alongside her, played their part in the historic campaign, and the celebrations inside the velodrome reflected the scale of the achievement.
Finucane now turns her attention to the remainder of the Games, with her place in Welsh sporting history already assured.
