Aston Villa have completed the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a record-breaking transfer for a Swiss player, as the 20-year-old World Cup sensation joins the Champions League-bound club.
The move, confirmed on Friday, sees Manzambi leave the German Bundesliga after a remarkable 2025-26 campaign in which he helped Freiburg reach the Europa League final — only to face Villa, who won 3-0 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to end a 30-year trophy drought. Despite the defeat, Manzambi was named Europa League Young Player of the Season.
British media report the fee exceeds £50 million ($67 million), surpassing the previous Swiss transfer record held by Granit Xhaka, who joined Arsenal from Borussia Mönchengladbach for approximately €45 million in 2016. Xhaka captained Switzerland alongside Manzambi at the 2026 World Cup.
