Luka Modric has agreed a contract extension with AC Milan that will keep the 40-year-old Croatian midfielder at San Siro until 2027, according to reports from Football Italia and Sportitalia.
The veteran playmaker, who joined Milan as a free agent from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, has decided to continue his storied career in Serie A for at least one more season. The new deal extends his existing contract, which was set to expire at the end of the upcoming campaign, by a further year.
Modric's decision comes as Milan prepare for a return to the Champions League under head coach Ruben Amorim. The Croatian has been clear since his arrival that playing in Europe's premier competition with the Rossoneri was a key motivation — he had never faced Milan at San Siro in the Champions League during his decade with Real Madrid.
Milan's squad planning for the 2026-27 season has accelerated in recent weeks, with the club having already invested heavily in new arrivals including Gonçalo Ramos and Mario Gila. Owner Gerry Cardinale visited Milanello on Thursday for a strategic meeting with Amorim and the club's directors, during which Modric's renewal was among the topics discussed.
The former Ballon d'Or winner made 38 appearances across all competitions for Milan last season, contributing with his trademark passing range and composure in midfield despite his advancing years. His experience and leadership are expected to be crucial as Milan aim to challenge both domestically and in Europe.
Modric's career has taken him from Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham Hotspur, where he established himself as one of Europe's finest midfielders, before his legendary spell at Real Madrid where he won five Champions League titles and the 2018 Ballon d'Or. His move to Milan in 2025 added a new chapter to an already extraordinary career.
