Mohamed Salah has joined Trabzonspor on a two-year contract, the Turkish club confirmed on Thursday, ending one of the most extraordinary transfer sagas of the summer with the biggest deal in Turkish football history.
The former Liverpool forward, who left Anfield as a free agent, signed after completing his medical in Istanbul and touched down in Trabzon on Wednesday evening to a rapturous reception outside Papara Park. "I have never seen a welcome like this," Salah told Turkish media as thousands of supporters gathered to greet him.
Trabzonspor had informed Turkey's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) that negotiations with the 34-year-old were under way, and the deal was wrapped up within 48 hours. Besiktas had long been considered favourites to land Salah before pulling out of the race, leaving the Black Sea club to complete a signing that would have seemed unthinkable even a year ago.
The financial package is unprecedented for Turkish football. Salah will earn a base salary of around €17m net per season, plus a €5m signing-on bonus, according to figures reported by Bloomberg and The Sun and detailed by CaughtOffside. That places him above Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, whose reported €15m-a-year deal had previously set the benchmark in the Super Lig. The agreement also includes an image-rights arrangement and a percentage of shirt-sale revenue, a reflection of the commercial pull Salah brings as the league's biggest global star.
Salah's move ends a nine-year association with Liverpool, where he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup, and established himself as one of the most prolific forwards of his generation. His contract at Anfield was due to run until 2027, but the two parties agreed to part ways a year early.
For Trabzonspor, who finished third in the Super Lig last season behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, Salah is both a sporting statement and a commercial gamble. The club hopes sponsorship growth and worldwide exposure will cover a significant share of the outlay. He will wear the number 11 shirt, with his official presentation scheduled for Thursday at Papara Park.
