Newcastle United have confirmed Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach. The club announced on Wednesday 5 August that the 38-year-old German has signed a four-year contract running until 2030, succeeding Eddie Howe, who stepped down in July after five years on Tyneside.
"This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand." Jaissle told the club's official channels that it was an "incredible honour" to take charge, adding: "When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice." He also set out his coaching philosophy: "My teams are built on togetherness, hard work, intensity and a passion to improve every single day,"
Jaissle will be working in one of Europe's top five leagues for the first time in his career. A former Hoffenheim defender forced to retire at 25 through injury, he began in coaching at Liefering before winning back-to-back Austrian titles and the Austrian Cup with Red Bull Salzburg between 2021 and 2023, taking the club into the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in 2022. He then moved to Saudi Arabia, where he led Al-Ahli to successive Asian Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. At 38, he becomes the Premier League's second-youngest current head coach.
