Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, holding off a fearless Aston Villa side to win 2-1 at the Stadion Salzburg.
Désiré Doué scored the winner with a curling second-half strike, after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opener had been cancelled out by 17-year-old Brian Madjo, who became the youngest player to start and score in a Super Cup final.
Kvaratskhelia put the reigning European champions ahead in the 20th minute, cutting in from the left and lashing a rising shot inside the near post. Villa, in their first Super Cup appearance, refused to buckle. Madjo, making his competitive debut after a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling cleared his registration, levelled on the stroke of half-time with a volley into the roof of the net from John McGinn's cross, having already hit the post after powering past Willian Pacho.
The decisive moment arrived on 62 minutes. Doué, who only returned to training on Monday after the World Cup, raced on to Ousmane Dembélé's pass and curled a left-foot finish into the far corner. The offside flag went up, but a VAR review showed Villa right-back Matty Cash was playing the 21-year-old onside, and referee Omar Artan — the first non-European to officiate a Super Cup — awarded the goal.
Villa pushed for an equaliser, and Warren Zaïre-Emery's last-ditch block denied João Gomes what looked a certain debut goal, before Emiliano Buendía headed wide in stoppage time. It was a fourth Super Cup final defeat as a coach for Unai Emery, after two with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.
PSG, back-to-back Champions League winners, became the first side to win consecutive Super Cups since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. Captain Marquinhos lifted the trophy as Luis Enrique's team claimed the first of a possible six titles this season; they face Lens in the Trophée des Champions on Sunday.
