Robert Lewandowski scored twice on his Chicago Fire home debut, including the 68th-minute winner, as the Fire beat Charlotte FC 2-1 at Soldier Field on Saturday night.
The former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund striker, signed as a free agent in late June, dragged his new side level after an early setback and then delivered the decisive goal to give Chicago their first MLS win since the international break.
Charlotte took the lead their bright start deserved in the 18th minute. Pep Biel exchanged a one-two with Idan Toklomati on the edge of the box, skipped past his marker and rifled into the top-right corner beyond Chris Brady — the Spaniard's team-leading ninth goal of the season. The advantage lasted barely two minutes. Jonathan Bamba lofted a through-ball towards Philip Zinckernagel, whose header dropped for Lewandowski; the Polish striker sold a dummy, shifted the ball onto his right foot and slotted into the bottom-left corner past Kristijan Kahlina for his first goal in a Fire shirt.
Chicago pushed for a second before the interval, with Robin Lod unable to convert from close range and Zinckernagel denied one-on-one by Kahlina after Lewandowski's pinpoint pass sent him clean through. The winner arrived in the 68th minute: Andrew Gutman found Lod in transition and the Finn played Lewandowski in behind, the striker beating Kahlina to spark celebrations across Soldier Field.
The win moves the Fire to 9-6-2 (29 points) and narrows the gap with the Eastern Conference's top three, while Charlotte (7-7-4, 25 points) have now lost four of their last five road games. Lewandowski is only the fourth player to score a brace on his Fire home debut, after Frank Klopas in 1998 and Andy Herron and Tomasz Frankowski in 2008.
"I'm really happy to be here," Lewandowski said. "I enjoy every day: the lifestyle, the club and the organization. Everything is really at a top level." Zinckernagel echoed the sentiment: "We still have to understand and learn how Lewandowski moves... but it was just a matter of time before he kept going."
