Spain captain and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri has completed a blockbuster transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona, signing a contract through 2030 in a deal reportedly worth around €75 million ($88.5m), ending a successful chapter at the Etihad Stadium.
The 29-year-old midfielder described the move as a "tough decision" but said Barcelona's footballing values were a decisive factor. "I had an incredible time at Manchester City and I will always be grateful," Rodri said at his presentation at Camp Nou. "But Barcelona represents something special — it is a club that matches my idea of how football should be played."
Rodri arrived at City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and quickly became the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola's side. He won four Premier League titles, a Champions League, and an FA Cup during his time in Manchester. His performances earned him the 2024 Ballon d'Or, the first for a defensive midfielder since Andres Iniesta in 2012.
His stock rose even further at the 2026 World Cup, where he was named the tournament's best player as Spain lifted the trophy in the United States. That display reportedly attracted interest from Real Madrid as well, but Rodri ultimately chose the Camp Nou.
Barcelona sporting director Deco hailed the signing as a statement of intent. "Rodri is one of the best midfielders in the world," he said. "He brings experience, leadership, and a winning mentality. This is exactly the kind of player we wanted to add to our squad."
The transfer fee, structured with an initial payment and performance-related add-ons, will be spread over several installments. Rodri is expected to be available for Barcelona's next La Liga fixture as the club prepares for a title challenge under new manager Hansi Flick.
