The WNBA has rescinded the technical foul called on Caitlin Clark during the Indiana Fever's 90-86 win over the Chicago Sky on Saturday, meaning the star guard will not serve an automatic one-game suspension.
The whistle, blown in the second half at the United Center, was Clark's eighth technical of the season. Under league rules, an eighth technical triggers an automatic one-game ban, which would have ruled her out of Tuesday's meeting with the New York Liberty.
A WNBA spokesman said the call was overturned within hours of the final buzzer, with the decision formalised on Sunday. Clark, who was sent out of bounds and made contact with an official on the play, insisted afterwards that the collision was accidental.
"She said I ran into her," Clark told reporters. "I have already watched it on the tape. So, we'll let the league decide. But it wasn't anything intentional or anything. So, I hope it gets rescinded. And nothing was said."
Fever head coach Stephanie White offered a far blunter assessment of the call, arguing the contact was incidental. "That's a bad call, incidental contact when you're flying out of control," White said. "Officials have to have some awareness in those moments, and it didn't happen."
The quick reversal means Clark, who finished with 26 points and 11 assists in the victory, will be available when Indiana face the Liberty on Tuesday. The Fever had feared losing their franchise player for the first time this season, a blow that would have landed in the middle of a tightly packed stretch of the WNBA calendar. The speed of the league's review spared Indiana a major headache on the eve of a pivotal week, and Clark is expected to start as usual when the Fever take the floor in New York.
