Italian national team opposite Yuri Romanò has signed for PGE Projekt Warszawa, with the 29-year-old set to make his debut in the Polish PlusLiga next season. The Warsaw club made the move official on Wednesday 12 August.
Romanò, a two-time world champion with Italy, joins from Fakel Yamal in the Russian Superliga and becomes the club's marquee signing for the 2026/27 campaign. He will link up with his new teammates after the 2026 European Championship. The move represents only the second foreign club of his career, after years in Italian volleyball with Milano, Piacenza and Siena.
"Joining PGE Projekt Warszawa is a huge challenge and an important step in my career," Romanò said. "The Polish league has been considered one of the strongest in the world for years, and the project being built in Warsaw impressed me a lot. I'm here to fight for the highest goals."
The capital club has positioned the signing as a statement of intent. Projekt Warszawa finished third in the PlusLiga last season and reached the Champions League Final Four for the first time in club history. Sporting director Piotr Gacek said the arrival of a player of Romanò's calibre underlined the club's ambitions.
"Italy and Poland currently represent the absolute top level of world volleyball, both in terms of the strength of their leagues and national team success," Gacek said. "Bringing in a leader from the very top is a huge source of pride for us and a clear signal of the direction we are taking as a club."
Romanò is no stranger to silverware. He won the Coppa Italia with Piacenza in 2022/23 and has been a cornerstone of Italy's golden generation: world champion in 2022 and 2025, where he was named best opposite, European champion in 2021 and continental silver medallist in 2023.
In Warsaw he joins a squad built to compete at the highest level at home and in Europe. With a proven match-winner arriving, Projekt Warszawa head into the 2026/27 PlusLiga season with renewed ambition.
