Luca Van Assche ha vinto il primo titolo ATP della carriera, superando Alexander Blockx 6-4 4-6 7-5 in una finale ricca di colpi di scena al Millennium Estoril Open.
Il 22enne francese, ex campione junior del Roland Garros, ha impiegato due ore e 24 minuti sulla terra portoghese per domare la tenace rimonta del belga, che nel set decisivo ha recuperato due break di svantaggio portandosi sul 5-5, prima che Van Assche trovasse l'ultimo scatto per chiudere al primo match point.
Van Assche, entrato in torneo al numero 78 del ranking, guadagnerà trenta posizioni salendo al 48° posto, facendo il suo ingresso in top 50 per la prima volta in carriera. Per lui è il quarto titolo stagionale dopo i successi Challenger di Quimper, Lilla e Parma, ma soprattutto il primo nel circuito maggiore.
Entrambi i giocatori disputavano la prima finale ATP, dopo essersi già affrontati a febbraio nell'ultimo atto del Challenger di Lilla, vinto nettamente da Van Assche.
Il primo set è stato una girandola di break: cinque consecutivi, nessuno dei due capace di tenere la battuta. Van Assche ha colpito per primo, è stato raggiunto, ha strappato un terzo break e finalmente ha consolidato il vantaggio sul 4-2. Blockx, reduce dalla semifinale di quasi tre ore contro Luciano Darderi, ha annullato un set point sul 3-5 ma Van Assche ha chiuso 6-4 dopo 43 minuti.
Nel secondo set Van Assche è partito forte, break in apertura e 2-0, con Blockx alle prese con un fastidio alla coscia. Ma sul 2-1 il francese ha concesso una palla break dopo uno scambio spettacolare concluso da un pallonetto millimetrico del belga. Blockx ne ha approfittato infilando cinque giochi consecutivi per il 5-2. Van Assche ha recuperato il break, ma Blockx si è procurato il set point con un diritto lungolinea e ha chiuso 6-4.
Il terzo set ha seguito lo stesso copione: Van Assche break in apertura, poi il secondo break per il 3-0, con una controsmorzata angolata e un passante vincente. Ma quando il titolo sembrava a portata di mano, l'ottavo doppio fallo del francese ha riaperto la partita. Blockx ha annullato due palle break sul 4-2 e ha completato la rimonta dal 3-0 al 5-5 dopo aver recuperato il break sul 5-4.
Van Assche ha però ritrovato la lucidità proprio sul più bello: aggressivo in risposta, ha conquistato il break del 6-5 e al primo championship point ha chiuso la finale.
Diventa il secondo francese a trionfare a Estoril dopo Richard Gasquet nel 2015, completando un fine settimana eccezionale per il tennis transalpino, impreziosito dal primo titolo ATP di Quentin Halys a Kitzbuhel e dal successo francese nel doppio.

Van Assche downs Blockx in Estoril final to clinch first ATP title
Luca Van Assche captured his maiden ATP Tour title on Sunday, overcoming Alexander Blockx 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a rollercoaster final at the Millennium Estoril Open.
The 22-year-old Frenchman, a former Roland Garros junior champion, battled for two hours and 24 minutes on the Portuguese clay, surrendering a two-break lead in the decider before regaining his composure to seal victory on his first championship point.
Van Assche, who entered the tournament ranked 78th, will climb to a career-high No. 48 and break into the top 50 for the first time — a reward for a season that already included Challenger titles in Quimper, Lille and Parma.
Both players were contesting their first ATP final, having previously met in the Lille Challenger final in February, which Van Assche also won.
The opening set was a chaotic affair, with five consecutive breaks of serve. Van Assche struck first, was pegged back immediately, then found a third break and finally held serve to consolidate for 4-2. Blockx, who had outlasted Luciano Darderi in a near-three-hour semifinal the night before, saved a set point at 3-5 but could not prevent Van Assche from closing out the set 6-4 after 43 minutes.
Van Assche started the second set strongly, breaking in the opening game and moving 2-0 ahead as Blockx appeared troubled by a thigh issue. But the match turned on a spectacular lob from the Belgian after he had retrieved a drop shot, earning a break point that Van Assche handed over with a poorly placed forehand. Blockx reeled off five consecutive games to lead 5-2. Van Assche fought back to recover the break in the ninth game, but Blockx earned a set point with a stunning down-the-line forehand and levelled the match when the Frenchman netted.
The third set followed a similar pattern. Van Assche broke immediately again, consolidated, and then extended his lead with a second break for 3-0, producing a brilliant running drop-shot and a passing winner. But just when the trophy seemed within reach, the Frenchman handed back one break with his eighth double fault. Blockx saved two break points to hold for 4-2, and when Van Assche served for the championship at 5-4, the Belgian fought back from 0-3 to level at 5-5.
Van Assche, however, gathered himself one last time. He attacked aggressively on return, broke for 6-5, and calmly converted his first championship point to seal the victory.
He becomes the second Frenchman to triumph in Estoril after Richard Gasquet in 2015, capping a remarkable weekend for French tennis that also saw Quentin Halys claim his first ATP title in Kitzbuhel.
