Napoli defender Alessandro Buongiorno has undergone surgery on his knee meniscus and will be out for two to three months. Sports director Giovanni Manna confirmed the news during a press conference, calling the injury "a surprise" for the Partenopei club.
The surgical procedure represents a significant blow for Napoli coach Massimiliano Allegri, who will have to face the first part of the season without one of his starting defenders. Buongiorno, who was a mainstay of the Azzurri defense last season, will face a rehabilitation period that will keep him off the pitch until mid-October.
Manna explained that the club is evaluating defensive options but is not in a rush. "Sam Beukema should be with the squad towards the end of pre-season training in Castel di Sangro. We are evaluating the defence, but are in no rush," the sports director declared.
