The Charlotte Hornets have parted ways with their franchise cornerstone, trading point guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a four-team mega-deal that also involved the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls.
Charlotte general manager Jeff Peterson confirmed the move Saturday at Summer League in Las Vegas, describing it as a long-term strategic decision despite the Hornets' 25-win improvement to 44 victories last season — their best campaign since drafting Ball third overall in 2020.
"These decisions are challenging at times, but when you look at the totality of the season and everything of where we were, it's important to take an honest look in the mirror," Peterson said. "The goal is never to compete for a play-in spot. The goal isn't to get to the play-in or even the playoffs for one year."
Ball, 24, averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game last season while drilling 272 three-pointers — second in the NBA behind only rookie teammate Kon Knueppel. Despite his individual production, Charlotte went six years without reaching the postseason proper, bowing out in the play-in tournament after beating Miami before a blowout loss at Orlando.
In the deal, Charlotte sent Ball and Josh Green to Minnesota in exchange for center Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, and second-round selections in 2029, 2032 and 2033. The Hornets also received a $40.7 million traded player exception — the largest in NBA history — giving them significant flexibility to acquire additional talent.
The trade drew a passionate response from Hornets fans, who had embraced Ball as the face of the franchise. Peterson acknowledged the backlash while standing by the decision.
"I do empathize with the fans," he said. "I love LaMelo. He's a tremendous human being. Of course, he's an enormous talent. But I have no doubt that this team we roll out next year and the years to come is going to continue to compete and eventually we'll get there."
For Minnesota, adding Ball transforms the backcourt alongside Anthony Edwards, pairing a proven three-level scorer and elite playmaker with the Timberwolves' existing core. The deal signals the franchise's push to contend immediately in a loaded Western Conference.
